Summary

In many major cities there are no maps with information specifically for the disabled, even though often accommodations for the disabled do exist.  This makes cities difficult for disabled individuals to navigate.  Create a tool that will allow ordinary citizens to use the web to input information about resources and features for the disabled around a major city (wheelchair ramps, accessible restrooms, special elevators, kneeling buses) and then allow people to access a city map that will display all those resources visually.

Example

An individual in a wheelchair wishes to visit a library.  There are four library branches in the city but only two of them have ramps that allow for wheelchair access.  The person can look at the map to see where the accessible library branches are located, what their hours are and where their wheelchair ramps are.

Use Case/User Story/Scenario

A restaurant owner has made efforts to ensure that his restaurant is wheelchair accessible.  He can publicize the information by inputting it into a form online, including his location and hours of operation, so people looking for restaurants with wheelchair accessibility know there is a business that caters to that need.

Description and Constraints

Consider how verification of information will happen.  How can we ensure good quality inputs?

Extra Credit

Develop a mobile application as well.

What next and Sustainability

The tool will need to be hosted online and publicized.

We have heard from our facilitator that the Russian team has already done a significant amount of work on this project. In order to facilitate progress of this project and move toward completeness in a shorter time, we would like to collaborate with the Russian team on it.
We would really appreciate if you could let us know of your current progress and agenda for the project. You can either write to gjp@umd.edu or my e-mail (chulk90@gmail.com).
